How Does it Work? / Pediatric Neurologist Treatment Process
At Butterfly Learnings, we follow a step-by-step protocol for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan for your child. The steps involved in the procedure are:
Consultation and Evaluation
When you first visit our center for a consultation, our pediatric neurologist or developmental pediatrician will assess your child properly.
Our doctor discusses your child’s symptoms and concerns with you, and also you’re your child’s pediatrician, teachers, and caregivers to know more about your child’s condition.
Diagnostic Assessment
After physically examining the child and learning about the child’s medical history and symptoms, the pediatric neurologist may recommend some diagnostic tests for an accurate diagnosis. The tests may include:
- Electroencephalography (EEG): It is a non-invasive test performed to record the electrical activity of the child’s brain and enable the diagnosis of epilepsy.
- Neuroimaging: Tests like computed tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans can help the doctor view the structure of the brain and detect abnormalities like brain tumors, stroke, infections, some genetic disorders, and multiple sclerosis.
- Blood Tests: These tests can help in checking any electrolyte changes or infections.
- Genetic Testing: This is a type of blood test that helps identify specific genetic mutations associated with various neurological conditions.
- Lumbar Puncture (Spinal Tap): The doctor will insert a small needle in the lower back region to get a sample of the spinal fluid, which is a fluid that surrounds the brain and the spinal cord. This test enables the doctor to check for infection or inflammation.
- Nerve Conduction Studies and Electromyography (EMG): These tests enable the doctor to check the child’s nerve and muscle function and diagnose various nerve injuries and neuromuscular disorders.
- Neuropsychological Testing: This test is done to check the child’s behavior, academic performance, and cognitive function to give a proper understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders.
Individualized Treatment Plan
We will then prepare a personalized treatment plan for your child depending on your child’s test results and assessment.
The treatment plan may or may not include pediatric neurologist services, speech therapy, occupation therapy, ABA therapy, shadow teacher services, etc., depending on the child’s condition.
